How to Pack a First Aid Kit for Your Car

- Base it on ur training level, circumstances, & expected levels of need.
- Include waterless wound care options.
- Avoid things that will go bad with age, or exposure to heat & cold.
- Locate it somewhere u can get to it in a hurry.
- When packing the kit, find a way to organize it so u can get what u need quickly. Buried items waste time in an emergency.
- Avoid kits that do stupid things- cheapo non-sticking bandages, 'first aid cream' or any kind of burn ointment, flimsy scissors, tiny bandages, etc.
- Good kits will include lots of big sterile guaze pads, big self-adhesive bandages, lots of roller guaze, at least one elastic bandage & triangular bandage, lots of disposable gloves, & some way to clean wounds in the field.

Look at examples on-line. The American Red Cross (redcross.org) offers a sweet, if slightly expensive, kit.

My kit would be:
- Packed in a tackle or tool box or zippered bag with lots of pockets.
Tools:
- Bandage or paramedic scissors
- Unbreakable or disposable fever thermometers
- Fine-tip tweezers- especially those designed for splinters
- A few tongue depressors (handy tools!)
- Small flashlight
- Disposable lighter
- Safety pins

HYGIENE & CLEANLINESS:
- Lots of non-latex disposable gloves
- CPR face mask (disposable)
- Alcohol wipes
- Pre-moistened towelettes
- 2-3 small bottles of sterile water for washing out eyes (not plain eyedrops)
- Wound cleansing wipes if available
- Cleanup kit- red bag, cardboard 'brush' & pan, absorbant material

BANDAGING
- Lots of 1''x3'' self-adhesive bandages, decent quality (I like fabric based)
- Handful of 3x3 or 4x4'' sterile guaze pads
- At least 2 rolls of 2'' roller guaze
- 2'' elastic roller bandage
- 2 Triangular bandages (homemade is cheapest!)
- Box of cartoon bandages if travelling with kids
- Package of moleskin or other blister care

MEDICATIONS (checked often!):
*As much as possible, these r in individual sealed packets!
*DOES NOT include specialty meds needed by family!
- Tylenol-type painkiller
- Low dosage chewable aspirin for heart attacks
- Pepto-bismol-type tablets
- Antihistimine/decongestant
- Candy (with real sugar) that does not readily melt

OTHER ITEMS:
- SAM splint (chunk of hardware cloth will work- this is for forming splints with.)
- Instant ice pack(s)
- Space blanket (small kind) for warmth
- Accident report form
- Pocket first-aid book or instructions
- Notepad & pencil

I suggest you go to your local Paramedic is or Ambulance station and ask them which kit and where to buy. They will recommend diffetrent kits depending on your needs.(car kit, boat kit, camping survival kit) Whichever kit you purchase I recommend you add: 2-3 bottles of water, some chocolate or barley sugar, matches/lighter and a torch. A blanket can be very handy too.

Im an EMT in the city- I personally have everything from flares to band aids.To be honest - it really depends what your planning and where your going. Alot of good suggestions came up. Any firestation can help you make a good kit. Many people I know have bought one at a medical supply company that specializes in emergency equipment sales. Either way have the boys at the station check one out for you or help you make it. They would be happy to help.
