1] turn person onto his/her side, with top leg crossed over bottom leg so person held in place while SOMEONE CALLS 911! [ side position will keep tongue forward, and allow spittle to run out - people can not swallow during a seizure ]
2] put padding under head if available, and remove any objects that could cause injury
3] remain with client until seizure resolved, and help arrives
4] do not put anything in client is mouth
5] do not try to restrain him/her
keltillos is absolutely correct, the only thing left out was too role the person into lateral/recovery position (on side) after the seizure has finished, to keep the airways open & if they vomit they wont choke on it.
If a person is left on their back the muscles relax, & their tongue can obstruct the airways, hence rolling the person on to their side.
Even if u suspect a spinal injury & the person has finished having the seizure u must still roll them on to their side. AS BREATHING TAKE PRECEDENCE OVER ALL INJURIES INCLUDING SPINAL INJURIES.
Other important things r to do;
Note the time of seizure & length of seizure
Manage any injuries
Establish the person has regained consciousness, then reassure them
If victim falls asleep, do not disturb
If they loose bladder or bowel control cover them with a blanket or jacket
If a pregnant woman has a seizure role her on to her left side, this is to keep blood flow to the fetus, & call an ambulance
If the person has a heart condition or a diabetic call an ambulance
It maybe worth ur doing a First Aid class to better manage any type of First Aid situation.
first answer is correct the only thing i would change is if they are on a hard surface your supposed to cushion the head or you can hold the head in your hands if you do not have anything to cushion
1. clear the area, so that the victim will not be hurt.
2. do not attempt to restrain the victim.
3. if he/she knocked his/her head before seizures, suspect for head/spinal injury.
4. Activate medical assistance(911 usa,999 uk, 160 phil. etc.) if:
a. patient is pregnant
b. suspected head & spinal injury
c. another seizure attack after the first one.
5. if seizures already started do not try to put anything in the mouth. *(rolled face towel or rolled handkerchief will only be allowed to be put on if the victim warns u that he/she will going to have seizures). *some patients can warn u before having seizure because they can fell tingling effect before the attack.)
6. after seizures, stabilize the head immediately.
7. Monitor the victim, Airway, Breathing & Circulation.
Put your foot under his head while he is having the convulsions so that he does not continue to hit his head on a hard surface. Do not restrain him. If the seizure continues after a few mins, call emergency. After the seizure, put him on his side so he does not choke.
call 911 and pot that person on his back to relax the neck muscles
1. Move anything away that he might hurt himself by striking.
2. Send away the dipshit bystander who wants to stick a wallet, tongue depressor, or other object in his mouth.
3. Activate your local emergency response system (911 in the US, 999 in UK, etc).
4. Do not attempt to restrain him.
5. When the convulsions cease, start first aid according to ABCs.
