Aside from the benefits of an ice-pack or cold-pack on the injury, the ammonium nitrate sack is:
a) always ready to be cold, can be stored at room temperature
b) somewhat flexible, can fit around and over an injury
c) contents are non-toxic if broken or spilled (normal precautions, do not ingest or get into eyes, etc.)
